I took this drawing out of order because it looks different than the others. One of the issues with charcoal is the quality of shading. In my early renditions of the Manhattan Bridge series, I wasn’t happy with the messy quality of the gradations, probably because I was trying to imitate what I do with pencils. Well, that just won’t work with charcoal. So instead, I explored the use of lines for shading. The result: this piece looks more like a preliminary drawing for a wood cut or linoleum print.
